The ‘An Urban Park for the Future’ 2024 Campaign successfully engaged over 1,000 citizens in Cascais, Portugal. Between May and December 2024, data collection was carried out across seven green spaces in the municipality, focusing on citizens’ experiences of thermal and bioclimatic comfort. This valuable data will inform urban planning decisions and the development of policies for green spaces, while encouraging active citizen participation in the process.
The campaign targeted seven key locations in Cascais: Penedo Urban Park, Quinta da Carreira Urban Park, Abóboda Urban Park, Fontaínhas Woods, Trajouce Urban Park, Constantino Garden, and Cascais Centre (connecting the train station to Jardim Visconde da Luz).
Since May, over 1,000 residents have taken part in the survey, with 57.48% of respondents identifying as female. Among the evaluated spaces, Quinta da Carreira Urban Park was rated the most comfortable, particularly by participants aged 25 to 34. Around 70 Cascais Jovem volunteers supported the campaign, ensuring its smooth operation.
Data collection was facilitated through an environmental satisfaction and bioclimatic comfort survey accessible via QR codes displayed at the study sites. Participants could use the QR code to access a map of the seven areas, complete the survey, and explore additional information about the locations.
As a thank-you, respondents received a pot of seeds or an infinity pencil. Early season campaigns also featured giveaways of aromatic plants, with 270 distributed throughout 2024.
The ‘An Urban Park for the Future’ 2024 Campaign has underscored the importance of citizen participation in shaping sustainable and accessible urban spaces. By gathering data directly from those who use these areas, Cascais is building a stronger foundation for informed policymaking and urban planning. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration between municipalities and residents can contribute to the development of greener, more liveable cities.
