Volunteers Lead the Way in Dundee’s Greenspace Strategy

3 min read • 30th September 2024

Following the launch of public data collection in July, Dundee is now focused on sustaining its campaign over the coming year, with the goal of gathering comprehensive data from across the city.

A key objective is to ensure that 30% of responses come from residents in areas of high deprivation, as determined by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. The data collected will be instrumental in shaping future city strategies, including the Open Space Strategy and the Local Development Plan.

Central to the success of this initiative is the growing cohort of Urban ReLeaf volunteers, whose contributions are essential in maintaining momentum and broadening community engagement.

The Importance of Volunteers

Urban ReLeaf’s volunteers represent a diverse cross-section of the Dundee community, ranging from students to retirees, including both lifelong Dundonians and newcomers. This diversity has been invaluable, providing fresh perspectives and developing stronger connections during public engagement efforts.

By contributing their time, energy, and local knowledge, volunteers play a pivotal role in raising awareness, facilitating public input, and encouraging wider participation in the project. As the project continues to evolve, volunteers will have the opportunity to tailor their involvement to suit their interests and availability. They will be supported in their roles as ambassadors, helping to drive continued engagement and ensuring the project’s long-term impact.

Looking Ahead

As the campaign moves into the autumn, the volunteer network will be crucial in maintaining the interest of groups that have already been engaged. However, the focus will also expand to include residents who are less frequently involved in citizen science initiatives or community projects, particularly those who do not regularly visit the city’s greenspaces.

With the help of this dedicated group of volunteers, the team aims to ensure that all voices across Dundee are heard, contributing to a more inclusive and representative dialogue about the future of the city’s greenspaces.
